In 2011, we visited friends in Yunnan. What was meant to be a trip became a turning point: mountain light over terraced fields, conversations over noodles—travel didn’t just inform; it transformed.
After multiple decorated combat deployments as a U.S. Army officer, Bobby chose to channel his sense of duty into people-to-people connection. We moved our young and growing family to Yunnan’s Himalayan foothills—to the ancient town of Lijiang along the Tea Horse Trail. We established a life, learned the language and local culture, and, along the way, earned the trust that opens real doors.
Later, when the world paused and travel shut down, we leaned in. Bobby completed a master’s degree in International Sustainable Tourism (University of North Texas and the Center for Tropical Agricultural Research and Teaching in Costa Rica’s rainforest), and we returned to China with deeper partnerships and sharper purpose.
